Fully restored and a competition winner, this tractor is absolutely like new and never to be repeated. This 1R was built in 1963 and sat alongside the Muira production line in the Sant’Agata factory.
Ferruccio Lamborghini started life manufacturing tractors – not the super cars the marque later become synonymous with. Back in period, demand for his tractors was so great he became one of the largest agricultural equipment manufactures in Italy. The wealth it generated funded his passion for cars – including Ferraris.
However, the Ferrari’s clutches kept giving him trouble and needed constant repair, so Ferruccio had his own tractor mechanics take a look. It transpired Ferrari was using the same clutch component as he used in his tractors. He paid 10 lira for his tractor clutches, yet Ferrari charged him 1000 lira for the same part. Not only was he outraged, Ferruccio was appalled that beautiful Ferraris were actually built with tractor parts.
Fuelled by typical Italian passion, he went to Ferrari’s head office and demanded to speak with Enzo Ferrari himself. Having made his feelings known to Enzo, Ferrari yelled back at Ferruccio, saying the problem wasn’t the car, it must be the driver and told him to go back to his tractors!
That insult inspired Ferruccio Lamborghini to build his own high-end sports car – and the rest is history…and Lamborghini still manufacture tractors to this day!
